Workshops held in the past, hosted by FWWG:
Oct 12-14, 2018 Jennifer Moore- Double Rainbow: 2 Layers, 4 Shafts, 6 Colors – Infinite Possibilities
This is perhaps the ultimate color sampler! We will begin with a day of warping in which you will learn Jennifer’s system for working with multiple colors in a rotational sequence. A basic two-layered structure will enable us to mix and match our colors, creating an amazing array of color mixtures. As you weave and your warp colors move past each other you will experience a visual feast of iridescence and moire patterns. We will also experiment with single-layered structures such as warp rep and warp-faced twills and the effects that they create on this versatile warp. This sampler will provide a remarkable education in color theory and how optical mixtures work in weaving, as well as a great source of inspiration for future weaving projects.
Jan 12-14 2018 Jette Vandermeiden All Tied Up workshop
Thread the loom with one versatile threading and learn how to re-arrange your tie-up so you can weave many, many different structures and projects without re-threading. Discover how integrated twills, layered double weave, summer and winter, plaited twill, breaks and recesses, M’s and O’s, waffle weave and so many others can all be woven with small changes to the tie-up. 8 shaft only
November 10-12, 2017 Linda Hartshorn: Natural Colors to Dye For Pictures of the workshop can be seen here
Create a full spectrum of color on wool yarn with dyes from plants, minerals, and an insect! We will dye with exotic materials including madder, Brazilwood, and cochineal, as well as some local plant dyes. Indigo blue will be dyed in its own unique process. The mordants that fix the dyes to the fiber (alum and iron) are safe to use and give fast and beautiful hues. Take home a set of sample skeins in twelve colors. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and a beautiful black are all possible with natural dyes.
With Silk Painting and Stamping with Natural Dye Extracts (last ½ day)
Handpaint and embellish two silk scarves with brilliant colors from plants, minerals, and an insect! Discover how to use natural dyes for surface design in a fun, hands-on workshop. We will make natural dye paints from extracts, and thicken them for stamping designs onto fabric. Take the scarves home to rinse out after they have cured. This workshop is an enjoyable introduction to natural dyes, perfect for all ages and levels of experience.
